Safaricom has made an innovative solution where its users can transfer money from Paypal wallet to their M-pesa accounts. The new move is anticipated to boost accelerate Kenyans’ access to international e-commerce platforms using their M-pesa.
M-Pesa users will just need to link their PayPal accounts to their M-Pesa. You can either withdraw money or deposit money to your PayPal account. This collaboration will enable more PayPal users to avoid fraudsters who have conned people purporting to help them access their PayPal account balance. The world is a small digital village and now people can easily book flights, pay for items on eBay or Alibaba and other global marketplaces.
Joseph Ogutu, director for strategy at Safaricom, said that the e-commerce industry is growing and the populace is now comfortable buying and paying for goods and services online. Efi Dahan, PayPal General Manager for the Middle East, Africa expressed his excitement to bring PayPal closer to African markets. Paypal is one of the largest payments providers globally and boasts of 210 million active PayPal users around the world in up to 25 international currencies. Mpesa accounts for approximately 20.7 million (66 percent) used Safaricom M-Pesa service.
The closest solution to this is the equity PayPal solution which allows the customers three working days to access their money after making a withdrawal from their PayPal accounts. Equity Bank’s transfer charges range from 1% – 1.5% depending on the amount of money to be transferred. Sectors that are likely to benefit from this move include online writing that is being embraced by many youths, freelancers, tech solution provides, travel and tourism companies as well as hotels.
This is the second move after Tech giant Google’s decision to allow customers to pay for applications using M-Pesa which strengthened the idea that for multinationals based in Kenya, Safaricom’s mobile money service is the par excellence agent of localization.
